On 10th October 2012 inauguration of water supply system took place in Chortoryya village, Illinetsky rayon, Vinnytsya Oblast. As a result of project implementation, artesian well and water tower were reconstructed, water supply network (6200 meters long) was constructed and 160 families were provided with water, including 130 pensioners, 8 disabled people, 87 children of preschool and school age. Besides, school, kindergarten and medical and obstetric post were connected to water supply network.

Absence of water supply was the worse challenge for Chortoryya inhabitants. They consumed low quality drinking water from public and private wells, nitrate and bacterial contamination of which was several times higher than the maximum permissible limits/norms. Water level in wells fell by 1 – 1, 5 meters within 2 last years. Due to lack of centralized water supply, village infrastructure developed too slowly, private households did not develop at all, living conditions of citizens did not improved and enterprises’ development was impeded.

Community united for a common goal and submitted a project proposal to DESPRO. “An ancient settlement Chortoryya, called from its former owner, Adam Chortoryysky, Polish nobleman and owner of Hranivski lands, lies near Soroka river, left tributary of Sob. It Pictureresque village is 35 km from Illintsi rayon capital. The beauty of this small Podillya village impresses everyone who has been to this God-blessed place at least once. It is a motherland of V. A. Heleta, Hero of Soviet Union…” – in such a way village inhabitants, who believed that they would improve their living conditions described Chortoryya.

A year has passed since the project proposal was submitted… Currently, village inhabitants have qualitative water supply in their households, kindergarten, school and medical and obstetric post.

Community’s faith in its strength, strong will to change life for better, financial support from local authorities and DESPRO comprise a success formula of Chortoryya inhabitants. 

Total project budget amounts for about UAH 650 000 (including 35, 57 % - DESPRO contribution; 9, 28 % - contribution from local budget and 54, 75 % - community’s contribution).
