As a result of cooperation with DESPRO, more and more residents of Dnipropetrovsk oblast have access to high-quality water supply

On June 30 a newly-constructed water supply network was put into operation in the village of Vesele (Rayivka village council, Synelnykovo raion). From now on, all village residents will have access to high-quality drinking water. The project was implemented as a result of cooperation of oblast council and Swiss-Ukrainian project DESPRO.

“Our village communities are now mature enough to be able to attract social investments and advanced experience in the area of water supply. We are witnessing actual progress in this direction – in the village, which never had centralized water supply, every household now has access to water. A significant part of funds for water pipeline construction was collected by community members themselves”, underlined the head of oblast council, Yevgen Udod.

Rayivka village council members stress, that from the moment of village foundation, its residents had to use water from wells, or pay for imported water. This resulted in multiple economical and domestic problems, particularly during summer months, when agricultural works took place in the fields. Usage of imported water for domestic needs, such as watering of kitchen gardens, was very costly. Social investments from oblast council and its international partners provided the incentive for creation of the village’s own water supply system.

During the project’s implementation, the community of Vesele village decided to frank the most socially-unprotected residents from financial contribution to construction of road water supply network, and agreed to connect the pipelines to their households. As a result, 54 households got access to free connection to water pipeline. These households only have to conduct individual connection of road network to their houses.

The project implementation started in September 2014. Since then, water pipeline and distribution networks have been constructed in the village, providing high-quality water to all village residents (345 households with the population of 806 people). The general length of the water pipeline amounts to approximately 9 km.

Project cost amounted to more than 1.5 million UAH, of which 300 thousand UAH were provided by DESPRO, oblast and raion budgets provided 250 thousand UAH each, 286 thousand UAH were provided by village council, while the contribution of the village community amounted to 465 thousand UAH.
